Very sorry to kick off 2012 with one less class of '93 classmate. I didn't know her all that well in high school but I do recall being in several classes with her. She was pretty quiet at the time but was always very nice and down to earth.

Once I reconnected with her on Facebook years later her true personality became evident. She was a very loving mother and a person with a big heart who made an impact on many people.

MASON CITY — A member of the River City Dames of Anarchy roller derby team is dead after taking a fall at the Roller City rink in Mason City Saturday night. Toni Torres, 36, Mason City, was reportedly injured in a fall at the rink at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Sgt. Mike Thomas of the Mason City Police Department. Thomas said Torres fell face-forward. He said she was breathing but unconscious when authorities arrived on the scene. A witness said she was participating in a speed-skating event when the accident occurred. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, where she was pronounced dead. Dames of Anarchy President Calley Welch said she wasn’t up to talking about the accident when contacted by the Globe Gazette Sunday afternoon.
